What it is
Snort 3 is the current major version, a rewrite that inspects packets with a rule language and optional IPS blocking. It can run inline or passively and loads community or commercial rule sets.
What it helps with
- Detecting known exploits and protocol abuse on the wire
- Running inline as an IPS to drop matching traffic
- Tuning rules for your own network baselines
- Feeding alerts into SIEM and packet archives
Who it's for
SOC analysts, network defenders, and detection engineers.
Worth knowing
This listing covers Snort 3 from the snort3 organization. Community rules are free; Cisco Talos also sells a subscriber rule set, which is optional and separate from the engine.
Should I use Snort 2 or Snort 3?
Snort 3 is the actively developed line; new work lands there.
How does it compare with Suricata and Zeek?
In our view Snort and Suricata are rule-based IDS/IPS engines, while Zeek focuses on rich protocol logs rather than signature alerts.
