What it is
An independent Rust reimplementation of the Bitwarden server API, formerly known as bitwarden_rs. It is not built or supported by Bitwarden Inc., and it works with official Bitwarden clients.
What it helps with
- Self-hosting a Bitwarden-compatible vault on your own hardware
- Serving official Bitwarden browser and mobile apps
- Running a small-footprint alternative to the official server
- Keeping vault data inside your own network
Who it's for
Individuals and teams who want a self-hosted password manager compatible with Bitwarden clients.
Worth knowing
The project is community-maintained and is not affiliated with Bitwarden Inc. Container images are the recommended install path on Docker or Podman.
Is this the official Bitwarden server?
No, it is an unofficial compatible server; Bitwarden Inc. builds and supports its own backend.
Which clients work with it?
Official Bitwarden clients work against it when pointed at your Vaultwarden URL.
How does it compare with other secret stores?
In our view Bitwarden is the closest commercial counterpart, KeePassXC suits local vault files, and Infisical suits app and infra secrets.
