What it is

Metasploit Framework is an open-source penetration testing framework maintained by Rapid7, Inc. and the wider contributor community. It provides a modular workspace for discovering, validating and demonstrating security weaknesses using exploit, payload, auxiliary, encoder and post-exploitation modules, including the Meterpreter post-exploitation payload family.

What it helps with

- Validating known vulnerabilities with publicly catalogued exploit modules during authorised tests.
- Generating and delivering payloads (for example via msfvenom) in controlled assessment environments.
- Running auxiliary scanners and checkers as part of infrastructure and application assessments.
- Performing post-exploitation tasks after an authorised foothold, including session management with Meterpreter.
- Developing or adapting modules in a documented Ruby-based development environment.
- Pairing Framework workflows with Rapid7 commercial products where an organisation already licences them (optional; not required to use Framework).

Who it's for

Penetration testers, red and purple teams, security researchers and students practising on systems they are authorised to test (labs, CTF ranges, contracted engagements).

Worth knowing

Use Metasploit only on systems and networks you are explicitly authorised to test. The free Metasploit Framework is distinct from Rapid7’s commercial Metasploit Pro edition. Framework source is primarily under a BSD-3-clause licence held by Rapid7; bundled third-party components carry their own licences. Official docs recommend nightly installers or the copy shipped with Kali Linux. Attribution: product framing from metasploit.com and docs.metasploit.com; licence from the Framework LICENSE/COPYING files on GitHub.
